Sliding doors don't require space for the door leaf to open, so they help reclaim floor area that would remain unused with traditional doors. They work well for entrances to a bedroom, wardrobe, pantry or laundry room, and also as a partition between the living room and kitchen. In this category you'll find made-to-measure sliding doors in wall-mounted and ceiling-mounted versions, single- and double-leaf, smooth, with slats, with a mirror or with decorative mouldings.
Wall-mounted or ceiling-mounted?
In wall-mounted doors the rail is installed on the wall above the opening, and the leaf slides along it. This is a good solution when there is a free section of wall next to the opening at least as wide as the leaf. For double-leaf doors such space is needed on both sides. Ceiling-mounted doors have the rail attached to the ceiling, so they are suitable for recessed installations, wardrobes or openings that reach the ceiling. Ceiling versions are usually slightly more expensive than their wall-mounted counterparts.
Single- or double-leaf?
One leaf is enough for a typical room entrance. Double-leaf doors are better for wide openings, for example between the living room and dining room, because they split the weight into two smaller leaves and allow opening only one half. Before choosing, measure the width and height of the opening and check whether there are sockets, switches or a radiator on the wall that would block the leaf's movement. It is worth measuring the opening in several places because walls and ceilings are rarely perfectly even.
Slats, mirror or smooth front?
Smooth Lores fronts are the simplest form that does not draw attention. Slats in the AROMA and PRIMA models add depth to the interior and suit a modern style. Kama, Moza, MONO and RIVI have a mirror that visually enlarges the room and is useful for a wardrobe or hallway, while ARTO with decorative mouldings gives the doors a more classic character. Check the panel colour on samples, because it looks different on a screen than in the interior.
What to know before buying
Sliding doors have no threshold and do not seal to the wall as tightly as traditional doors, so they provide less sound insulation. In a bedroom or study this usually isn't a problem, but for a bathroom or a room where you need quiet it is worth considering. All models are made to measure, so the leaf will be matched to your opening.
